Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka's medieval capital and a UNESCO site of beautifully preserved ruins — the Gal Vihara's four giant Buddha statues carved from a single granite face are the highlight. The compact, flat site is perfect by bicycle.
Best time to visit
December to March is coolest. Explore early morning or late afternoon; the Gal Vihara is best in soft morning light.
Getting there
About 5 hours from Colombo, close to Sigiriya and Dambulla. Rent a bike at the entrance to cover the scattered monuments.
