About Sigiriya (Lion Rock)
Sigiriya — the 5th-century Lion Rock — is Sri Lanka's most iconic sight and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A 1,200-step climb up iron staircases passes mirror-wall frescoes and the colossal lion's paws before reaching the palace ruins on the summit, with 360° views over the cultural triangle.
Climb at first light (06:00) between January and April for cool weather and clear summit views. Avoid midday heat year-round; the rock closes during heavy rain.
About 3 hours by road from Colombo (180 km) via the Dambulla turn-off. Most visitors stay in nearby Sigiriya or Dambulla and combine the climb with the Dambulla cave temple and a Pidurangala sunset.
