Fishing has shaped Sri Lanka's coastal villages for centuries, from stilt fishermen near Koggala to the outrigger fleets that launch at dawn from Beruwala and Negombo. Going out with a local crew is one of the most genuine half-days you can add to a beach stay.
The three kinds of trip
- Traditional outrigger trip — two to four hours at sunrise with a village crew using hand lines. The most authentic and the most affordable.
- Lagoon and mangrove fishing — calm water at Negombo or Bentota, excellent for beginners, families and birdwatching along the way.
- Deep-sea charter — a full day on a bigger boat trolling offshore for tuna, sailfish, barracuda and giant trevally.
What you might catch
Inshore and lagoon trips typically bring up snapper, trevally, barracuda, mullet and squid, with crab and prawn in the mangroves. Offshore, the target species are yellowfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish, mahi-mahi and kingfish.
Many crews will happily cook your catch on the beach or arrange for your guesthouse to prepare it that evening — ask before you set out.
Best seasons and conditions
On the west and south coasts the calmest seas run from November to April, matching the main tourist season. On the east coast around Trincomalee, May to September is the settled window.
Dawn departures are standard: seas are flat, fish are feeding and you are back before the heat. Lagoon trips can also run beautifully at dusk.
What to bring
- Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and polarised sunglasses — there is little shade on a small boat.
- A light long-sleeved shirt and non-slip footwear.
- Water and a snack; smaller boats do not carry catering.
- Motion sickness tablets taken an hour before departure if you are prone.
- A dry bag for phones and cameras.
