Sri Lanka has around 1,300km of coastline, and choosing a beach is really about choosing a season. The south and west shine from November to April; the east takes over from May to September.
South coast — the all-rounder
- Mirissa — blue whale trips from November to April, a lively beach strip and the famous Coconut Tree Hill.
- Unawatuna — a sheltered curved bay, the safest swimming near Galle and good for families.
- Weligama — soft beach breaks and Sri Lanka's best beginner surf schools.
- Tangalle — long, quiet stretches of sand and boutique villas; strong currents in places, so swim where locals do.
- Hiriketiya — a small horseshoe bay that has become the country's laid-back surf and yoga hub.
West coast — closest to the airport
Negombo is convenient rather than beautiful, ideal for the first or last night of a trip. Further south, Bentota offers calm river-mouth water and every watersport, while Hikkaduwa combines a reef with turtles that come close to shore and a long-running surf scene.
East coast — May to September
- Arugam Bay — a world-class right-hand point break and the island's best surf town from May to September.
- Nilaveli and Uppuveli — wide white sand near Trincomalee, with Pigeon Island snorkelling just offshore.
- Pasikuda — a shallow, calm bay that stays swimmable for hundreds of metres out, excellent for children.
Marine wildlife by season
- Blue whales off Mirissa — November to April.
- Whales and dolphins off Trincomalee — May to September.
- Turtle nesting at Rekawa — year-round, peaking April to July.
- Snorkelling at Pigeon Island — May to September; Hikkaduwa reef — November to April.
Beach safety
Rip currents are the single biggest hazard on Sri Lankan beaches, and most stretches have no lifeguard. Swim between headlands in sheltered bays, ask your hotel about conditions that day, and be cautious anywhere the sand shelves steeply into the water.
