Above 1,200 metres Sri Lanka changes character completely. The heat drops, the air smells of eucalyptus, and the hills are covered in the tea bushes that made Ceylon famous. Two or three days here balances a coastal itinerary perfectly.
Nuwara Eliya — Little England
Sri Lanka's highest town keeps its colonial bones: a racecourse, a golf course, pink-brick post office and hedge-lined gardens. Evenings genuinely need a jacket.
Use it as the base for a working tea factory tour, Gregory Lake, and a sunrise trip to Horton Plains, where the World's End escarpment drops 880 metres and is usually clouded over by 9.30am.
Ella — the traveller's favourite
Ella is smaller, warmer and much more relaxed, with cafés, waterfalls and short hikes on the doorstep. Little Adam's Peak takes about forty-five minutes each way and is best at sunrise; Ella Rock is a steeper two to three hour effort with a guide recommended.
The Nine Arch Bridge and Ravana Falls are both within a few minutes' drive, and the town makes an easy staging post before descending to the safari parks.
Haputale and Lipton's Seat
Less visited and arguably more beautiful, Haputale clings to a ridge with views to the south coast on clear days. From nearby Dambatenne, the drive or walk up to Lipton's Seat at dawn passes tea pluckers starting their shift and delivers a 360-degree panorama that most travellers never see.
Understanding Ceylon tea
- Nuwara Eliya high-grown teas are light, bright and floral.
- Uva teas from around Ella and Haputale are darker and more aromatic.
- Kandy mid-grown teas sit in between, fuller-bodied and malty.
- A good factory tour follows the whole process — withering, rolling, oxidising, firing and grading — and finishes with a tasting.
Practical notes
- Pack a fleece and a light rain jacket; hill mornings drop to 10°C or lower.
- Roads are narrow and winding — allow more driving time than distances suggest.
- Two nights in the hills is the minimum; three lets you add Horton Plains without a brutal early start on a transfer day.
