Almost every Sri Lanka itinerary includes one safari, and the choice usually comes down to two parks in the south. They are only two hours apart but they offer very different mornings.
Yala: the leopard park
Yala Block 1 has one of the highest leopard densities recorded anywhere in the world, alongside sloth bears, elephants, crocodiles and spectacular birdlife. The dry season from February to July concentrates animals around waterholes and gives the best sighting odds.
The trade-off is popularity. On a peak-season morning dozens of jeeps enter at 6am, and a leopard sighting can attract a queue. Booking a private jeep with an experienced tracker, and entering through a quieter gate, makes a large difference.
Udawalawe: the elephant park
Udawalawe holds several hundred resident elephants across open grassland, so sightings are close to guaranteed in any month, often of large family herds with calves. Visibility is far better than Yala's scrub, which also makes it excellent for raptors and water birds.
There are no leopards in practical terms, and fewer jeeps. For families, first-time safari-goers and photographers who want unobstructed light, Udawalawe is frequently the better morning.

How to book a good safari
- Take the 5.30am drive, not the afternoon one — animals are active and the light is soft.
- Book a private jeep rather than a shared seat so the driver follows your interests.
- Ask whether park entry fees are included in the quoted price; many cheap quotes exclude them.
- Stay in a lodge near the gate the night before so you are not driving in the dark at 4am.
- Bring binoculars, a long lens, a hat and sunscreen — the jeeps are open-sided.
Can you do both?
Yes, and many travellers with a spare day do exactly that: Udawalawe on the way down from Ella, Yala the next morning before continuing to the coast. If you only have one morning, choose by what you most want to see rather than by reputation.
