Mirissa

The top spot for whale watching and beautiful sunsets — palm-fringed crescent on the south coast.

About Mirissa

Mirissa is the south coast's beach-and-whale capital — a palm-fringed crescent famous for blue whale watching, Coconut Tree Hill and laid-back surf. It's the postcard image of tropical Sri Lanka.

Best time to visit

November to April is whale-watching season and the calm south-coast dry season. Blue whales are seen on most dawn boat trips; the sea is rough outside these months.

Getting there

About 2.5 hours from Colombo by the Southern Expressway. Mirissa is 15 minutes from Galle Fort and close to Weligama's stilt fishermen and surf schools.
